Dungeons By Dan · Quick start

Run your first session with GM Toolkit

Start with one campaign, a few journal entries, and an initiative list. Add character generation and player sharing when you need them.

1. Start a campaign and collect your notes

Open Campaign Manager and use the campaign toolbar to create or select a campaign. In Journal, add your session plan, NPCs, locations, clues, or quests. Search, tag, and pin entries so the next scene is easy to find.

The Free Plan supports one active campaign; Pro supports up to ten. Review the current account and membership options inside the app.

2. Prepare an encounter and track turns

In Encounter Builder, select the 2014 or 2024 rules, enter party levels and counts, then add monster challenge ratings. Treat its difficulty estimate as a starting point: terrain, objectives, and party resources still matter.

Return to Campaign Manager → Initiative for turns, rounds, hit points, and conditions during play.

3. Generate and customize one Quick Hero

Open Generators → Quick Hero. Choose a species, class, and supported level, then generate a recommended SRD-based character. The current choices include nine species, all twelve core SRD classes, levels 1–6, and every even level from 8 through 20.

Use Customize Hero to adjust ability scores and combat statistics or add and edit weapons, features, and gear. Review the result, then copy it or save it to the active campaign’s characters. Clear Hero clears only the preview, not previously saved characters.

This is a fast premade-character starting point, not a complete rulebook or a builder for every published subclass. Check the finished sheet with your GM.

4. Share only what your players need

Use Share & Preserve to create a Join Game link. Guest players can join without an account. The shared tabletop can show initiative, selected notes, and dice results; private GM journal material is not automatically shared.

Start with a simple shared encounter before adding the skill-challenge, gambling, poison-tasting, drinking-contest, or chase mini-games. PIXELS dice are optional; the games also offer on-screen or entered rolls.

5. Protect the campaign before you close the browser

The browser copy is your working save. Download a JSON backup through the campaign’s backup controls. Clearing browser storage, using private browsing, or switching browsers can leave that local copy unavailable.

Signing in enables optional account-backed campaign backup and recovery. Keep a downloaded backup as an independent copy, and check Privacy & Data in the app for the current storage and sharing details.
